What is the difference between Interpreting and Translating? Interpreters work with spoken and signed languages and translators work with written languages. For meetings, appointments, phonecalls or anything involving spoken communication you will need the services of an interpreter. For application forms, policy documents, correspondence and anything involving written communication you will need to engage a translator. Interpreters may be able to assist to interpret a form, or written correspondence at an appointment but it is appropriate to negotiate with your client what is their preferred means of communication.
